TfNSW Safety Vehicle Standards Now in Effect — What You Need to Know

As of 26 August 2025, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has officially rolled out its Minimum Requirements for Contractor Vehicles. These mandatory standards are now in force and apply to all contractor fleets operating on TfNSW projects across New South Wales.

What’s Changed?

  1. Mandatory Compliance Across Fleets
All contractor vehicles — light, heavy, and plant — must now comply with TfNSW’s updated safety framework. This includes roadworthiness, certification for modifications, and alignment with Australian Design Rules.
  2. Heavy Vehicle Requirements Under CLOCS-A
Heavy vehicles must meet at least the Bronze level of CLOCS-A, which includes safety upgrades such as reversing cameras and sensors, improved visibility systems, and underrun protection. Higher compliance levels (Silver and Gold) involve advanced technologies such as blind spot detection, audible warnings, autonomous braking, and telematics.
  3. Road Safety Alignment
These standards are a critical part of TfNSW’s 2026 Road Safety Action Plan and Future Transport Strategy 2056, aimed at reducing deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads.

Why It Matters

  • Improved Safety for Road Users
Vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from stricter requirements around visibility and detection systems.
  • Consistency Across Projects
Contractors now operate under one clear standard, lifting the safety benchmark across all TfNSW works.
  • Legal & Financial Risk Reduction
Non-compliance could lead to lost contracts, fines, or liability issues. Fleet operators who haven’t acted yet must prioritise upgrades immediately.

Next Steps for Contractors

If your fleet hasn’t yet been reviewed:

  • Audit your vehicles against the new TfNSW requirements.
  • Upgrade safety systems such as cameras, sensors, and underrun protection.
  • Ensure certifications for any modifications are on hand.
  • Train staff and drivers in new safety protocols.

The regulations are now active, so compliance is no longer optional. Contractors who act quickly will avoid penalties and maintain eligibility for future TfNSW projects.
