Outdoor
LED Displays
Manufacturer reference project. Sansi.
Two ranges, from close range retail frontage to large format roadside. Australian supply, warranty and support.
An outdoor display has to hold up against direct sun, survive a decade of weather, and dim down at night without lighting up the house across the road. The two ranges below cover most of it. Which one you need usually comes down to how close people get to it.
How close people get
Pixel pitch is where most specifications start and it is the wrong end to start at. Work out how far away the closest viewer stands, then work back.
| If the closest viewer is | Range | typical Sites |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 metres away | XA | Forecourts, entries, retail frontage, pedestrian areas |
| Beyond 10 metres | XS | Roadside, carparks, sports grounds, building facades |
The further back the audience, the coarser the pitch can be and the less the screen costs to fill. Paying for a fine pitch nobody is close enough to see is the most common way to overspend on an outdoor display.
the ranges
XA Series.
Close range and pedestrian facing.
The fine pitch option. Pixel pitch 2.5 to 6mm, up to 6,000 nits, front IP65 and rear IP54. Full black SMD gives a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, which is what holds the image together when someone is standing a few metres away. Built for forecourts, entries, retail frontage and anywhere foot traffic gets close to the screen. Cabinet sizes are configurable.
XS Series.
Large format and long viewing distances.
The distance option. Pixel pitch 6.67 to 16mm, up to 7,500 nits, front IP65 and rear IP54 with front or rear maintenance access. The coarser pitches make large areas affordable to fill, which is why it suits roadside, carparks, sports grounds and building facades. Integrated cooling and pixel by pixel calibration keep it running once it is up.
Applications
Roadside and advertising.
Digital billboards and out of home sites.
Retail and forecourts.
Service stations, drive throughs, car yards, shopping centre entries.
Sports grounds and clubs.
Scoreboards, perimeter and spectator screens.
Civic and community.
Town centres, community information, event and wayfinding screens.
Building facades and architectural.
Large format on the building itself.
four things worth deciding early
These four change the specification more than the pixel pitch does, and they are cheaper to answer now than after the steel is in the ground.
1. Who sees it at night?
Outdoor displays get specified on daytime brightness and complained about at night. Both ranges dim from 0 to 100 percent, manually, on a schedule or automatically off a light sensor. Where a site sits near housing, a road or a sensitive zone, night time output is usually assessed against AS/NZS 4282:2023, the standard councils and road authorities cite for obtrusive light. We can supply the luminance data and commission the display to a maximum output your consultant or the consent conditions call for. Contact us and we will work through it with you.
2. What is behind the screen?
Maintenance access drives the structure, not the other way around. XA at 2.5 and 3mm is rear access only, so the design has to leave working room behind the cabinets. XA at 4 and 6mm and the whole XS range can be serviced from the front or the rear. If the display is going flat against a wall, say so before anything is engineered.
3. What is it mounting to?
Free standing, wall mounted or on the building. XS cabinets run around 40kg in aluminium and 60kg in iron, and that adds up quickly across a large screen. We supply the weights, mounting details and drawings so your engineer can size the structure and certify it for the site.
4. How much power is on site?
Outdoor screens draw real power. Peak is 600 to 750 W per square metre depending on the range and pitch, with average running draw at roughly a third of that. On a sizeable screen that is a supply decision, not an afterthought, so it is worth checking what is actually available before the design gets locked in.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What pixel pitch do I need?
It depends on viewing distance more than anything else. Under 10 metres, XA at 2.5 to 6mm. Beyond 10 metres, XS at 6.67 to 16mm. The further back the audience, the coarser the pitch can be.
Will it be readable in direct sunlight?
Yes. Outdoor displays run far brighter than indoor ones, up to 7,500 nits on the XS range, and brightness adjusts automatically as ambient light changes through the day.
Will it disturb neighbours at night?
Not if it is set up properly. Output dims from 0 to 100 percent on a schedule or automatically off a light sensor. Where a site sits near housing or a road, there are usually planning conditions on night time brightness, and the display should be specified to meet them from the start.
What does front IP65 and rear IP54 mean?
The front face, which takes the weather, is sealed against dust and water jets. The rear, which is protected by the structure or the building, is rated for splashing water. It is the standard arrangement for a cabinet mounted outdoors.
How much power does an outdoor display use?
Peak draw is 600 to 750 W per square metre depending on the range and pitch. Average running draw is roughly a third of that. We provide the figures for your specific screen size so the supply can be sized properly.
Who certifies the structure?
Your structural engineer, for the specific site. We supply the manufacturer’s structural data and weights to work from. AS 1170 wind certification is site specific and no supplier can hand you one off the shelf.
Do you supply displays for digital billboards and DOOH sites?
Yes. Both ranges are built for continuous commercial operation. XA covers closer, pedestrian facing sites and XS covers roadside and large format.
Do you install?
No. We supply the display and support it. We can refer you to a contractor.
Who handles a warranty claim?
We do, in Australia. Claims come to Innov8.
